The Department of Sindhi at Government Islamia Arts & Commerce College, Sukkur, Sindh, holds a distinguished place in the academic and cultural history of the institution. For generations, the department has played a vital role in promoting the Sindhi language, literature, culture, intellectual traditions, and ethical values of society.

The department has had the privilege of being led by eminent scholars, researchers, writers, and literary personalities. Before the nationalization of the college, Prof. Dr. Abdul Majeed Sindhi, a renowned researcher and distinguished literary figure, served as Head of the Department of Sindhi. The department was also headed by Prof. Israr Ahmed Alvi, internationally recognized for his expertise in Seerat-un-Nabi ﷺ (the life and teachings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ).

Among the other distinguished scholars who have served as Heads of the Department are Prof. Ghulam Hussain Memon, Prof. Manzoor Bedar,  Prof. Ali Gul Behan, Prof. Manzoor Bedar, (again) and Prof. Rafique Ahmed Memon. Their scholarly contributions and dedication to education played an important role in strengthening the academic and literary traditions of the department.

For the past two years, the department has been headed by Dr. Abdul Latif Ansari, Ph.D., who’s academic and research interests include Sindhi literature, literary criticism, classical and modern Sindhi literature, folklore, culture, language, and linguistics.
